Just looking at this Barbie set, I can hear Ricky in his Cuban accent singing “We’re having a baby, my baby and me”, and I can visualize Lucy nodding when he dismisses that she is the one pregnant!
50 years ago during the golden age of television, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz created an incredible comedy series. I love Lucy premiered on October 15, 1951 and quickly became one of the most popular and beloved shows in the history of TV. The adventures of the air repressible redhead and her Latin love boat husband, Ricky charmed America winning over 200 awards and consistently topping the ratings for six years. Generation after generation continues to fall in love with Lucy and Ricky, Fred and Ethel, and, of course, Little Ricky. The last new episode aired on May 6, 1957. Ever since, I Love Lucy has played almost continuously around the clock somewhere in the world. At almost 100 television stations across the United States, and 80 countries around the world, Lucy still brings joy and laughter with her unique comic genius.
In the 50th episode, Lucy is Enceinte, Lucy discovers much to her delight in amazement that she is going to have a baby. Her whole life she is dreamed of a romantic moment sitting on her husband’s lap, cradling his head in her arms and softly sharing her news. As always, Lucy’s plants go awry. She hatches a plan and goes to Ricky‘s night club, the Tropicana. At the door, she asks the maître d’ to give the bandleader a note which requests that he sings this song “we’re having a baby, my baby and me”. Ricky begins by singing Rockabye Baby to the audience, walking amidst the tables, trying to find the expectant parents. Happily, cheerfully, Lucy finally shares her news with Ricky… and the world!
Lucy and Ricky Ricardo made us laugh, cry, and smile warmly. Lucy is Enceinte is especially touching, because Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz were expecting a baby in real life. Once again, they shared their most personal and happiest moments with us, and in the process, created an immortal television moment.
